4 of the Best MIPS Horse Riding Helmets

Michelle Drum

We love horseback riding, and we know you do, too! It’s our goal to help everyone pursue this passion as safely as possible. In this post, we’ll share our top picks for MIPS horse riding helmets — the latest in equestrian head safety technology.

Choosing the Right Helmet for Horseback Riding

Equestrian helmets aren’t one-size-fits-all. For your helmet to work effectively, it’s important to select a properly fitted horseback riding helmet for your head size and shape. Some people’s heads have a more oval shape, whereas others are more of a round shape. It’s ideal to look at various options to see which style and brand(s) fit you the best. And be sure to measure your head properly to ensure you have the right size.

When you choose a helmet, measure the widest part of your head an inch above your eyebrows. Then, compare it to the size charts for the brands you’re considering. When you place the helmet on your head, make sure it’s snug but comfortable. Many helmets have adjustments for the fit, though you should be pretty close when you first put it on your head if it’s the right size. If it rocks from front-to-back or side-to-side, you might want to try a different helmet shape. Also, keep in mind how you’ll wear your hair for competitions. It’s a good idea to wear the same hairstyle while trying on helmets that you would wear for competition, to make sure you’re comfortable.

MIPS: The Latest Safety Technology

We have seen a lot of updates and small changes to helmet safety technology over the last decade or so. None are quite as exciting — and potentially transformative — as MIPS. This Multi-Directional Impact Protection System is a newer technology that’s starting to get more attention. It’s still not widely used, but we’re seeing more brands include it in their offerings, and the trend will likely continue.

A neurosurgeon designed MIPS to protect the brain from angled impacts to the head that cause rotational motion. It’s not a safety measure currently required by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). However, we do think this additional safety feature may become standard in the future. It should be a strong consideration for you as you choose your horse riding  helmet, as it offers additional, unparalleled protection from this kind of head injury.
