How to Change the Co2 Canister in Your Equestrian Air Vest

Allie Harbuck

Falling off a horse is not fun but it does happen! Most of the time, it’s no big deal when you take a fall as long as you fall correctly.  An air vest is the most reliable way to stay safe and helps you build confidence as you ride, but it does take some practice to wear and use correctly, especially when it comes to swapping the cartidges. Here’s our easy startup guide to equestrian air vests, changing the Co2 Cartridge, and some of our favorite safety vests for riders at every level.

What are equestrian air vests?

Equestrian air vests are a type of horse riding safety vest designed for riders seeking additional protection for the torso area. When you fall, a cord attached to your saddle deploys the CO2 canister and fills the vest with air to help reduce the impact if you fall. The key areas protected by air vests are the spine, ribs, and internal organs.
